The Proposal Would Enable Commercial AeroMACS Operations at U.S. Airports, Making Air Travel Safer and Faster for the American Public
CLACKAMAS, OR – June 6, 2019 – The WiMAX Forum® applauded today’s vote by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopting a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) proposing service rules for the Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System, better known as AeroMACS.
AeroMACS is a next generation airport surface communications system designed to promote safety and on-time flight performance at airports around the globe. Today’s NPRM proposes specific technical and licensing rules that are required before commercial AeroMACS operations can become routine at U.S. airports. Many of the proposals included in the NPRM are based on industry-consensus proposals the WiMAX Forum filed with the FCC in 2017.
“AeroMACS communications will make air travel safer and faster for the American public,” said Declan Byrne, WiMAX Forum President. “I applaud Chairman Ajit Pai and his colleagues at the FCC for proposing rules that will allow for the widespread deployment of AeroMACS at U.S. airports. For over a decade, the WiMAX Forum has played a leading role in advancing the development and testing of this vital new communications system. Today’s action by the FCC brings us one step closer to realizing robust and secure commercial AeroMACS communications. As the global aviation community moves forward in deploying this technology, I look forward to working with stakeholders and the FCC to expedite the adoption of final rules that will ensure the availability of AeroMACS communications at U.S. airports as soon as possible.”
