A Significant Milestone for Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS) Certification Has Been Achieved
CLACKAMAS, OR - April 25, 2016 - The WiMAX Forum® proudly announces that its member company Telrad Networks Wave 1 AeroMACS Certification at Powertech Labs Inc., the WiMAX Forum AeroMACS Designated Certification Lab in North America. As the first manufacturer to have AeroMACS equipment certified to Radio Conformance Testing (RCT), Telrad Networks has been a vital part of the validation process, which ensures more efficient testing for RCT. Wave 2 AeroMACS Certification is expected to begin later this year at Powertech Labs Inc. and will include Protocol Conformance Testing and Interoperability Testing to complete full WiMAX Forum AeroMACS Certification.
Said Eugene Crozier, Wireless Specialist of Powertech Labs Inc., “With Telrad Networks having completed Wave 1 AeroMACS Certification, we are confident that we will be able to complete the RCT portion of certification more smoothly when other AeroMACS equipment manufacturers approach us to certify their equipment this year.”
“We are proud to be the very first AeroMACS certified solution,” commented Mark Altshuller, Chief Technology Officer for Telrad Networks. “The AeroMACS standard is a paradigm shift for airports around the world, enabling a new level of security, scalability and cost-efficiency in their surface communications systems. Telrad is looking forward to playing a key role in the industry and supporting the aeronautical and national airspace broadband ecosystem with our newly certified products, including the advanced BreezeCOMPACT base station, CPE5000 fixed or mobile devices, as well as our unique ASN-GW & StarSuite network management system.”
“Wave 1 AeroMACS certification brings us a step closer to Wave 2 AeroMACS Certification. With full certification, we will be able to offer the AeroMACS ecosystem interoperable equipment and ensure that this equipment meets requirements of other organizations in the Aviation industry,” said Declan Byrne, President of the WiMAX Forum. “AeroMACS will be deployed more widely and thus benefit all stakeholders—aviation authorities, air carriers, and airports.”
AeroMACS is a wireless broadband communications system for the airport surface based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has identified AeroMACS as a central technology for future aviation requirements in the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP). Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and EUROCONTROL have identified it as necessary to support air traffic control and management and increase the safety and regularity of flight. AeroMACS operates in the 5091-5150 MHz band for airport applications allocated by the ITU.
At the ICNS Conference in Herndon, VA in April 2016, Declan Byrne and Dr. Nima PourNejatian, WiMAX Forum Chief Technology Officer, discussed “AeroMACS: How to Warrant Interoperability” and our achievement. Brian Crowe, Vice Chair of the WiMAX Forum Aviation Working Group and Sr. Advisory Engineer at Hitachi, presented “Proposed AeroMACS Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) as a Model for Global and National Regulatory PKI Deployments.” Wave 1 and Wave 2 AeroMACS Certification as well as AeroMACS interoperability, security, and PKI were the hot topics discussed during the event.
