SIRIM QAS International selected for WiMAX™ certification lab in one of the fastest-growing WiMAX-enabled regions
PORTLAND – April 5, 2011 –The WiMAX Forum® announced today that it has selected SIRIM QAS International to manage a WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Laboratory (WFDCL) in Malaysia. This laboratory will be part of WiMAX Forum's global initiative of establishing and operating such centers in key telecom markets, and it began accepting products to initiate testing and certification on March 10, 2011.
“SIRIM QAS International’s WiMAX Testing Laboratory was established to support Malaysia’s vision of providing nationwide access to ‘Anywhere, Anytime, Any Device and Any Person’ information and communications technology,” said Khalidah Mustafa, Managing Director of SIRIM QAS International. “With more than 30 years of experience in testing and certification, our company is one of the region’s foremost testing and certification bodies.”

The Malaysia lab complements the WiMAX Forum's current network of six to handle the continued certification demand. The WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Labs including AT4 Wireless (U.S. and Spain labs), Bureau Veritas ADT (Taiwan), Telecom Technology Center (Taiwan), China Academy of Telecommunication Research (China), and the Telecommunications Technology Association (Korea), have prepared resources to certify equipment and devices in an end-to-end interoperability testing (IOT) environment.
Products achieving WiMAX certification go through rigorous testing to ensure they meet the interoperability and conformance standards of the WiMAX Forum. WiMAX is the only technology to certify both base stations and terminals, ensuring that interoperability is carried across all levels of the WiMAX network when WiMAX Forum Certified products are used in a deployment.
“Today the WiMAX Forum welcomes an additional certification lab into its network to provide the Southeast Asia market with another choice for certifying WiMAX products quickly,” said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum. “For operators, WiMAX Forum certification provides a reduction of in-house interoperability testing resources and costs, and quicker time to market and reduced risk for introductions of new devices on their networks. For device vendors, the program will enable instant access to participating operator networks, enabling them to market the same model of innovative product to operators around the globe.”
The WiMAX Forum currently tracks nearly 600 WiMAX deployments in 149 countries. More than 188 devices and 62 base stations have been certified by the WiMAX Forum for the 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands.
